If you see No Service or Searching in the status bar on your iPhone, your device isn't connected to a cellular network.
If you see SOS or "SOS only" in the status bar, this feature allows you to still make emergency calls when not connected to a cellular network.

If you are seeing SOS or "SOS only" without any noticable cause such as:
Your device is most likely unable to establish a cellular network but can still make emergency calls.
Try the following options to get connected to a cellular network:
Turn Airplane Mode On/Off
Restart your Phone
